The concept of Art Deco originated at the 1925 International Exhibition in Paris, Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes.

The Swedish pavilion was a success, and Swedish design made its international debut. Three years later, in 1928, the M/S Kungsholm sailed from Gothenburg on its maiden voyage to New York. The elite of Swedish architects, designers and artists, led by architect Carl Bergsten had been selected to decorate and furnish the ship, and the world was astounded over its beautiful interior decorating and the design of what was considered one of the most beautiful passenger ships on the planet.

This was Swedish Art Deco, with a light, elegant and playful feel, inspired by ancient classicism with a good touch of functionalism. This delicate elegance is what we now refer to as Swedish Grace. In Sandberg's Grace wallpaper collection released in 2014, they have derived inspiration from this wonderful chapter in the history of Swedish design, retelling it in a modern idiom.
